WebMar 7, 2024 · The Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier, also known as a Wheatie or Wheaten, originated from Ireland as early as 1937. The graceful, yet strong terrier breed is an all-around dog. Their size (roughly 17-20 inches) and their weight (about 30-45 pounds) makes them able to perform as a general farm worker yet still be agile as a vermin exterminator. The Wheaten was bred in Ireland for over two hundred years to be an all-purpose farm dog whose duties included herding, watching and guarding livestock, and vermin hunting and killing. They share a common ancestry with the Kerry Blue Terrier and the Irish Terrier but were not owned by gentry. In Ireland, they were commonly referred to as the "Poor Man's Wolfhound."
