WebTownend is a large house and farm located on Holbeck Lane to the south of Troutbeck. It was built in 1626 for George Browne, a wealthy yeoman farmer and his bride, Susannah Rawlinson. Townend is one of the best surviving examples of a Lake District 'statesman' farmer’s dwelling of the 17th century. Townend became a National Trust property in 1948.
